Intelligent robots and autonomous systems need to understand and model their surroundings to act smartly. Our lab focuses on probabilistic as well as learning techniques enabling mobile robots and autonomous cars to boost their performance in the real world. Our research explores novel methods for perception, modeling, and action generation for such systems. The research fields of the StachnissLab include the simultaneous localization and mapping problem, scene interpretation, state prediction, environment modeling, autonomous navigation, and exploration. We are working at the intersection of robotics, photogrammetry, and computer vision in a team coming from engineering, computer science, geodesy, and natural sciences. Our key application areas are agriculture robotics, autonomous cars, and service robotics. Our lab is part of the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformation at the University of Bonn. Cyrill Stachniss, who is also one of the spokespersons of the DFG Cluster of Excellence PhenoRob, heads the lab. He is additionally a Visiting Professor in Engineering at the University of Oxford and is with the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
